QuestionAfter doing some research, I see differing opinions about the medical specialty to be consulted for a pinched nerve and/or herniated disc. Some choose an Orthopedic Surgeon, while others choose a Neurosurgeon. Why the discrepancy? Which is the most common choice for these ailments? Thanks!
AnswerThis Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Podiatrist of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......
Dear Jim,
An Orthopedic Surgeon operates on bones & joints of the body. A Neurosurgeon operates on nerves. If the Orthopedic Surgeon is a back surgery specialist-then that would be the person to go to .The neurosurgeon may be involved if there is damage, potential damage, etc to the nerves of the spine. If needed they may work as a team.
Generally speaking, the neurosurgeon does direct surgery on the nerve-like a repair-which the Orthopedic Surgeon does not.
Hope This Helps!
and
Good Luck!
