Question
Hello.  I have had neck pain for the past 10 years.  It isn't constant - but, I am unable to do sit-ups, or put together puzzles with my sons for more than 10 minutes.  Had an MRI/CT years ago and underwent physical therapy for a few months then moved and discontinued.   My last MRI in 2007 was as follows (summarized):
There is sclerotic irregularity and invagination of the inferior C5 and superior C6 end plates.  The margins of endplates are well defined and sclerotic.  The disc space is narrowed and there is a mild degree of spondylosis with both anterior andposterior marginal osteophytes.  No osseaous canal stenosis.  AP diamater of the osseous canal is measured at 1 cm.  Uncovertebral joint hypertrophy is noted on the right with minimal C6 foraminal narrowing.  Left C6 foramen is widely patent.  At the C5-C6 level, there are sclerotic irregularities of the vertebral body endplates and narrowing of the intervertebral disc.  The findings suggest premature degenerative change of the intervertebral disc, likely from Schmorl's node.  Minimal right C6 foraminal narrowing is noted.

Questions:  Is this what is causing my neck pain?  What exactly is wrong with my neck?  An ortho I saw about 5 years ago mentioned I had a fracture, nowhere on the radiology report does it say that.  Should I see a Neurosurgeon or Orthopaedic - I would like to see someone about it and am not sure who?  Thank you!!

Answer
Dear Cindy,
This Chicago Podiatrist, Elmhurst Podiatrist & West Loop Podiatrist says.......
See an orthopedist who specialist in neck surgery. You may have had a fracture-which appears to have healed with arthritis of that area of the cervical spine. The findings state the there is extra bone(spurs)which limit movement and irritate the muscles around that area-which produces the pain you describe. I would restart the physical therapy & see if there are exercises that may improve your functionality. I have had several injuries, similar to yours in different areas from martial arts & skiing. I have good days & bad days-but what helps me the most is a steady stretching & an exercise program. For sure improve your posture & pay attention to positions which increase pain-for example-keep a straight posture while doing the puzzles and try to do them on a table at the height of your chest while sitting-to limit bending forward at your neck.
Good Luck!
