Now, as you know, orthopedic pillows are recommended to be used to reduce pain in the neck, shoulders and head, reduce stress and offer you a better quality sleep. Basically, do what regular pillows are most times unable to do. However, there are some pluses and minuses that you should be aware about.
Advantages
Orthopedic pillows help soothe neck and back pain, relieve jaw tension, prevent lumbar pain and frozen shoulders, and so on and so forth. They are also great for preventing sleep apnea, reducing snoring and helping with insomnia by helping you sleep better.
There are many types of orthopedic pillows, and these have different shapes and designs. This is due to the fact that orthopedic pillows are built to cater to personal needs and preferences. There are side sleeper orthopedic pillows, inflatable neck pillows, stomach sleeper orthopedic pillows, and even orthopedic pillows for the whole body, or only for your back, knees or arms. These are all designed to offer users a maximum comfort and relaxation.
Disadvantages
There are lots of materials used in orthopedic pillows. You should always know exactly what you’re buying, because even if these materials are soft and comfortable, some of them might be allergenic for some people. Especially allergy sufferers and asthma sufferers need to double check before buying an orthopedic pillow. Of course, there are hypoallergenic orthopedic pillows available for those that are allergic to synthetic fills, feathers and foam, and other potentially allergenic materials.
Another possible disadvantage might be the firmness of some orthopedic pillows. If the pillow is too soft, your neck can sink in, causing you back pains, headaches and breathing problems. At the same time, a hard pillow can cause muscle tension, which leads to jaw tension and neck stiffness. The position that these pillows force you to sleep in can cause and intensify some pains.
This is why, you should always choose a pillow specially designed for your sleeping position ( back, side or stomach). A contour pillow is designed to support your shoulders, neck and head. If you go for a neck pillow, you should know that these are used to support your neck while you’re sitting up – on your office chair or when you’re driving. Lumbar orthopedic pillows are designed for your lower back, offering it relaxation and comfort. Body pillows are designed to support the entire body, and knee pillows alongside the hourglass shaped pillows are designed to improve the blood flow in your legs.
Keep in mind that when you buy an orthopedic pillow you want to buy one that caters to your specific needs, and that you want to avoid buying the wrong type- or else you’ll end up doing yourself more harm than good.
