Osteoporosis is a disease that makes the bones fragile. This ‘bone-thinning’ disease causes the bones to break or crack resulting in bone fractures. It is also referred to as the ‘silent disease’ because one cannot see or feel when ones bones begin to weaken or thin down. Nobody can even guess that their bones have become fragile until their bones break. Usually the spine, wrist or the hipbones break. This may result in a lot of interference in daily activities.

It is not necessary that with ageing, you will fall into the grasp of this disease. Only if you take precautions from now, you will prevent that to happen. It is more of a woman’s disease. So it is important to preserve the calcium in our bodies to make our bones strong. To ensure a healthy life supported by strong bones, read the following carefully.More…

Nutritious Diet – A healthy diet will ensure that you get all the vital nutrients important for you and your bones. They are phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin D. The most important nutrient to have strong bones is calcium. This is why children should be encouraged to drink milk. If there is any hereditary of osteoporosis in the family, the chances of the offspring suffering from the same is even more. Milk is a complete food that makes bones strong. 1000-1200 milligram of calcium is to be taken per day. If anything less than this required amount is taken the body will take the calcium from the bones making them weak. Even calcium supplements are available in the market. Vitamin D is required to extract calcium from the food we eat. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight. A short walk in the garden on a sunny day will only be beneficial for us.

Regular Exercise – One should engage in bone strengthening exercises. Jogging, running, skipping, climbing stairs, some sort of outdoor sport will strengthen the lower body’s bones. Sit-ups and push-ups, stretching will strengthen the upper body’s bones. There is no harm in exercising for 30 minutes daily, if it ensures ‘osteoporosis free’ future.

Smoking Is Injurious – Believe this! Smoking causes the onset of menopause two years in advance. The actual mechanism of interference of smoking with having healthy boons is still not known properly, but it definitely interferes with the absorption of calcium in the body, resulting in delicate bones.

Bone-preserving Drugs – These days calcium supplements are available in the market that help to balance the calcium intake in the body. If somebody has an osteoporosis history in the family, there are higher chances of children suffering from this disease. Dosage of these supplements may vary from individual to individual. It is therefore wise to consult a clinician before actually indulging in these supplements or drugs.

There could be many ways of escaping this painful disease. Eat healthy, live a healthy lifestyle, do not indulge in alcohol and smokes, do not go on a crash strict diet if you somehow did not fit into that dress. After all, nothing could be more important than you and your bone-supported future. And watch your step! Don’t fall!
