Chiropractic was developed over 100 years ago by Daniel David Palmer and comes from the Latin words "cheir" (hand) and "praktos" (done) meaning done by hand. Doctor Palmer felt that is most accurately described the methodology of chiropractic.
This hands-on work is what makes chiropractic so effective. Chiropractic will take on a hands-on approach to helping rid you of your neck pain. Chiropractic will use pressure and precise but gentle force on certain areas in order to realign the joints to their proper positioning. This will increase, circulation, mobility and eventually function to that area.
Why do I have neck pain?
People will develop neck pain for a number of reasons. Maybe you strained a muscle while gardening. Maybe you grind your teeth at night. When there is misuse or strain of neck muscles repeatedly over time it can result in neck pain.
You may have a predisposition to osteoarthritis which will result in worn joints. This usually happens later in life and can cause serious pain and stiffness in the neck.
Or, you may have had an injury. This is most common with car accidents that are rear-end collisions. This causes whiplash with stretches the soft tissue surrounding the neck and causing them to tear.
When do I seek help?
If you have been in an accident, you should seek help from a chiropractic physician immediately after the accident. If you are having chronic pain you should also seek help as soon as possible. There is no reason to continue to live in pain if you can find a chiropractic health professional that can get you on the road to recovery.
What should I expect?
The chiropractic physician will take a full personal and family health history to assist in the diagnosis of your problem. The philosophy of chiropractic is one of maintaining health rather than treating symptoms or disease so looking at all factors related to lifestyle, family history and environment to determine the best course of action moving forward.
Your chiropractor will also use different diagnostic tools to determine where the dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system truly lies. This will also help to determine and assess the schedule of chiropractic adjustments needed. The adjustments are needed to be done on a regular basis in order to re-establish function and mobility to the injured area.
