Often, a patient's back pain complaints can be solved by wearing a back brace or support. Back supports are a good way to relieve pain and promote good posture. From that lumbar pillow on the office chair to the brace used during the occasional game of pick-up basketball, there are back supports that will keep your office staff and patients safe and protected no matter what they do.
Poor posture is not only the result of pain, but it can cause it as well. For many people, this serves to create a vicious cycle in which pain and poor posture escalate to increasingly impaired levels. The best way to interrupt that cycle is to recommend that your patients wear back supports between treatments.
There are several different types of back supports to choose from, all of which are available online. There are support belts, vests, and even maternity belts. the most common type of support belts are composed of an elastic panel that supports the waist. These elastic panels are reinforced with flexible stays and tension straps so that any injured or stretched muscles in the lower back or stomach are are protected during strenuous play or work.
Other options include rib belts for women that can be worn next to the skin, underneath clothing. Some belts are specially designed to be multi-functional--they can be used as an ab binder, a post-operative support belt, or to bind the abdominal muscles. It may be a good idea to keep these belts handy in the office, both for patients and for office personnel who may do heavy lifting, moving, or extensive work in front of the computer.
