Back pain is suffered by many millions of people who find no long term relief from this complaint. Finding some form of medication to bring back pain relief is probably a sufferers first thought, even if it is only temporary. Although some medication may be effective and bring pain relief, it doesn't really help with the underlying problem of the condition causing the distress.

Many people with spinal problems become addicted to the medication that relieves the back pain but this should really be the responsibility of a doctor.

Back pain is often caused by muscle strains, repeated strenuous exercises and poor sitting posture.

However, back pain is usually caused by a lifting accident or from lifting incorrectly and it is normally the lower back that suffers. There are a number of natural back pain relief methods that mean you will not have to rely on drugs. Tense muscles in the back can be eased just by gentle stretching. This provides relief and is simple to carry out.

Another type of treatment uses reflexology to massage the feet. It is a very old natural therapy which helps to relieve many chronic ailments. Often, to compensate for our pain, the back muscles over-compensate. Reflexology can also help to improve the body's blood circulation and relax muscles.

Acupuncture is used frequently by people suffering spinal agony by giving them back pain relief just as it has for thousands of years, although, only recently in the West. Acupuncture works by releasing the 'chi' or energy flow that every living thing has. It can become clogged up when sickness is present. Using thin needles placed into the body at specific points can free this energy. There are large numbers of people that use acupuncture on a regular basis and claim it works well for them providing pain relief. This is especially true for those who have what is termed a chronic condition.

The Chinese discipline of Tai Chi has also provided relief as it uses yoga-like principles. It is far easier and much slower, so there is less likelihood of further damage being caused. Tai Chi focuses on breathing techniques and is a great way to relax your back. Whilst it involves some stretching and breathing exercises, it is not too strenuous, which means that anyone, young or old, can take part in Tai Chi.

It would be a shame not to finish by remembering that exercise can provide back pain relief and that regular exercise is also one of the best preventative medicines available.
