Any individual may be subject to the incapacitating effects ofbackpain. There are, however, certain risk factors that make an individual more susceptible todeveloping pain than others. Age, fitness level, weight, smoking, and jobs are just a few factors that can directly lead tobackpain.Unless pain becomes severe and/or chronic, extreme measures may be avoidable by simply taking certain preventative measures to reduce the influence of these factors.
As an individual ages, the first occurrence of lowbackpain tends to arrive between the ages of 30 and 40. However, very active adults are less prone tobackpain because they continuously maintain, as well as build, strength and flexibility of the core muscles.Weight also plays a significant role in the development ofbackpain. It is extremely important to maintain a healthy weight; not only for overall health, but also for back health. When a person reaches an unhealthy weight, it causes additional stress to the back. This stress can transition into chronic back pain, which will not diminish until a healthy weight is reached. To prevent weight gain, it is important to consume a healthy, well-balanced diet and stay physically fit.
Staying physically fit also improves one's posture and the muscle's ability to support the body. Maintaining or gaining strength within the core muscles will help prevent back injury. When lifting, no matter how heavy the object may be, it is imperative to use proper mechanics. Make sure to bend the knees when picking up, as well as when putting down, an object. If moving an object, wrap the arms around the object and securely place the hands on the bottom corners. While walking, keep the object as close to the waist as possible.
Smoking affects an individuals total body health, as well as their spinal health. When an individual smokes, he or she reduces blood flow throughout the body. When the flow slows, spinal discs in the lower back begin to degenerate due to a lack of nutrients provided by the blood. Some smokers also develop a "smoker's cough." In some instances, the individual's cough becomes so severe the spine becomes sensitive and irritated.
Individuals who have physically demanding jobs are also more susceptible to experiencing acutebackpain. Continuous pushing, pulling, lifting, and twisting can increase the likelihood of developing this type of injury. However, one does not have to have a physically demanding job to developbackpain. People who have "desk jobs" are also at risk. The poor posture and high stress associated with job dissatisfaction often lead tobackpain. Thus, it is important to maintain good posture and a relaxed state of mind throughout the workday. Being in-tune with the physical state of one’s body aids with prevention of back pain. Certain stretches and therapeutic practices can also be implemented into a daily regimen to alleviate some of the strain associated with mental and physical stress. There are a multitude of other ways to personally monitor and prevent acutebackpain due to desk jobs. Maintaining the natural curvature of the body while seated helps to prevent strain. To do this, concentrate on keeping the neck, shoulders, and lower back in line as if standing erect. Periodically moving the body will also ease muscle tension.
By maintaining good health and being conscious of one's body, backpain prevention is possible. However, it is important to remember that if pain becomes persistent and affects daily activities, it is advisable to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
