Many have learned the hard way about the importance of using the best mattress to soothe and prevent back pain. Sleeping on a poor mattress not only aids in back pain, it also creates issues with posture, alignment and strained muscles; all causes of back pain as well. The great misconception is that all back pain is created equal. The fact of the matter is that different areas and levels of back pain require different types of mattresses to be best fitting. The trick is to find a mattress that supports the paining area of the back while providing an added comfort so that the spine may become rejuvenated throughout the night.

With tons and tons of mattresses on the market it may seem overwhelming or nearly impossible to find the mattress that is right for you. However, there are a few practical guidelines to use when assessing a mattresses level of back support and comfort.

First, you are encouraged to assess your personal preference. How is the mattress that you are currently sleeping on and what is its shortcoming? Is the mattress to firm or too soft? Is it lumpy? Does it feel uneven? Do you find yourself making several position adjustments throughout the night? All of these factors are to be considered. Keep in mind that there isnt one mattress that is just perfect for everybody. You must find your fit. Whichever mattress relieves pain and provides comfort is the mattress for you.

Second, you want to be sure to understand the many components of a mattress. Assess the depth of the mattress. Most mattresses typically range from 7 to 18 inches deep. How are the coils or inner springs of the mattress working for you? Mattresses do not all share the same coil and spring patterns. Be sure to know which pattern allows less pressure to the back. If you do not even notice the pattern in the coils or springs that may be a good fit. Padding on top of the mattress is also very important. Padding varies in depth, as well, and should be modified to suit your need.

Third, your mattress is all about support. Make sure that your desired mattress provides adequate support for the alignment and curves of the spine. There have been studies that have suggested that medium firm mattresses tend to provide more back pain relief then mattresses that are very firm.

Fourth, its all about a balance between support and comfort. Comfort and support are synonymous in that a glitch in one will inevitably affect the other. Support and comfort are completely left to individual discretion but medium firm mattresses have been known to provide great comfort and support by allowing the shoulders and hips to sink causing a greater sense of relaxation.

Fifth, give it up. When you are noticing that it may be time for a new mattress, get a new mattress.
