How To Ease Back Pain Due To Pregnancy

Most pregnant women will experience some kind of back pain during pregnancy due to the extra pressure put on their bodies especially being front heavy. Not only do they carry the extra weight in front of a baby but also enlarged breasts. In addition to this, they often have to sleep in unusual positions and find a hard time getting comfortable when sitting or standing, putting a strain on the back.

This causes back pain during early pregnancy stages. But, there is pain relief available. Often women who are pregnant do not want to put many drugs into their system either, so the methods of relief should be as natural as possible. It is important that no harm is done to the child or mother in any of the methods for pregnancy back pain relief. The health of the mother and baby are always the primary consideration.

The following treatments ease back pain during early pregnancy and back pain during pregnancy:

•    Hot and cold therapy

The heat will relax the muscles and lower the pain while the ice packs will numb the pain for a while. It is typically done in about 20 to 30 minute intervals and then switching. Having a warm water bath is another alternative and proves as a relaxing technique.

•    Body massage

Rubbing or massage with heat can be quite effective to increase the blood and alleviate pain. The heat massage relaxes the muscles and allows it stretch.

•    Maintaining a good sitting posture

Back pain during pregnancy is mostly affected by sitting posture. Adopt a good sitting posture to reduce strain on the spine. Make sure the chair has good lumbar support, arms rest and a firm cushion. Raise the feet to a comfortable level by using a footrest. Avoid crossing the legs which will thrust the pelvis forward and strain the back.

•    Having intervals of walking and resting when needed.
Refrain from sitting for too long, or standing for too long. Take breaks by walking, standing and doing light stretching. Rest one leg on a low stool and do some knee bending exercises.
•    Wearing comfortable shoes

Refrain from wearing high heels or flat shoes, to ensure that the center of gravity of the body goes not change with the extra weight. To keep your body balance and in proper alignment, it is important to wear comfortable shoes with low heels.

•    Sleep on a firm mattress

Sleeping on a firm mattress and pillow will provide a good support your back, and eases the pressure on it.

•    Do light exercises regularly.

Exercise regularly helps to strengthen the muscles and improve flexibility, alleviating the stress on your spine. Exercises that are safe include swimming, walking, yoga and stationary cycling.
