Patients suffering from lower back pain are also associated with knee pain. Lumber 5 and Sacral 1st nerve roots are irritated to give rise to these problems as these two nerve roots are supplying most of the muscles crossing the knee or insert near the knee. When hamstring muscles are shorten due to spasm, it can cause knee pain.
Knee pain is felt maximum when the knee joint is stretched, or bend extensively or excessive weight is on the knees. Even crawling and kneeling movement is also responsible for knee pain. So flexion or extension of knee joint can be painful according to the muscle involvement that are responsible for these movements. If a muscle from the extensor group is stretched, it will give rise to low back pain and knee pain at the same time. When the flexor muscles are affected, usually, knee pain is felt exclusively.
There are many cases where, treatments are done only considering the knee extension problems and the muscles associated with this particular movement. Usually, these cases are similar and have same kind of complications. But, before treating a patient suffering from back pain, it is very important to diagnose the root of the problem.
Focusing while diagnosing is a very important part of back pain treatment. The assessment should be done considering all the movements associated with hip joint, knee joint. This will help to learn about the underlying cause behind this pathological manifestation. And it is better to treat them to the point to avoid any other problems associated with the prognosis approach.
Sacral 1st nerve is the major root nerve which is responsible for supply in the lower back region. Muscles in this region has rich nerve supply from this nerve root. Lying a patient with his facedown, it is easy to asses the condition of musculoskeletal system. By pushing down the buttock and thigh towards the buttock, it is possible to asses the strength of the giant muscle gluteus maximus. So, most of the assessment procedures are possible to practice bedside. In case, nothing is found as the major cause behind lower back pain, MRI and X-ray is strongly suggested.
