Lower back pain is one of the common problems. According to an estimate, almost 80% of individuals develop lower back pain at some occasions in their life. Lower back is an area which bears the total weight of the body. This is the reason why back pain develops due to bad posturing more frequently.
Muscular strain is one of the major causes of back pain. This strain develops when an unforeseen pull or twist is acted upon different muscles present at the lower back. These forces lead to tear of muscles. Muscular pain developed due to tearing is severe and unbearable. Another common problem which leads to the pain at lower back is the sprain in the ligaments present around the backbone. Injury or stretch of ligaments may sometimes become very painful and requires rest and painkillers for several days. Sometimes sprains and tears in the ligaments happen together and in such cases even smaller movements at the back become extremely painful.
The third major reason of backache is the herniated discs, which lead to the compression of spinal nerves. An intense pain is generated due to the compression of these nerves which moves down along the nerve towards the legs. One example is Sciatica in which Sciatic nerve is compressed and the patient gets a lot of lower back pain which radiates towards the lower part of the leg on the respective side. The pain may also develop from the disc herniation in the back bone either due to vibratory motion, or due to the action of sudden force at the lower back.
Back pain due to spinal stenosis happens usually after the age of 50 years. In this condition, the spinal canal becomes narrower due to several reasons. Like for instance; the canal becomes narrower due to bony spurs, thickened ligaments, inflammation, etc. Sometimes surgery is required in such cases in order to correct the problem.
Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis are also the main causes of lower back pain. Osteoarthritis is one of the commonest bony problems in which the joints get deformed. A patient not only develops severe pain, but also acquires joint deformity and stiffness. Osteoarthritis of the lower back spine would be much painful and a patient might develop inability to move easily at the axis of lower back. Osteoporosis is usually seen in women after menopause, in which demineralization of the bones happens due to the lack of female hormones. The bones become brittle and easily breakable. A woman gets a lot of pain, and her bones become more susceptible to fracture.
