You have many choices out there for dealing with arthritis pain. But it is imperative that you equip yourself with more knowledge before you resort to self-medication for your arthritis, and so you should go to see a doctor before you proceed. If you suffer from arthritis and have pain associated with it, you will need to be aware of the fact that a few pain killers used in the treatment of arthritis can have adverse side-effects if taken over long periods of time.

Most doctors will recommend that you first try an over the counter NSAID for arthritis pain relief. If your arthritis is moderate, Aleve or aspirin can be utilized as an effective arthritis pain medication. This is best if you only have occasional arthritic pain.

You may also try applying one of the many creams and ointments that are available to ease arthritis pain. Normally, topical creams will help to lessen the pain from arthritis by going through the skin and deep into the joints. Some treatments are only available through a prescription, but if your pain is not severe you can try one of the many OTC methods of treatment. You can apply the creams a few times a day as needed, unlike oral pain meds. Another advantage is that the pain relief that topical creams deliver is instant and they can be used alongside oral pain medication. Before you mix any drugs, though, talk to your health care provider first.

Corticosteroids are another form of arthritis pain medication that alleviates inflammation and regulates the patient's immune system. These drugs can be administered through the mouth or in shot form. Another option for arthritis is Methotrexate, though it's less commonly prescribed than other medications. If you find that none of the other treatment methods are working for you, your doctor may turn to this medication.

Whatever over the counter arthritis pain relief medicine you use to get some relief, you have to be certain that you speak with your doctor before you take it. If you have a liver condition you may be unable to take specific pain killers. Be sure to check that all of your medications are okay to take together in order to avoid any ill effects to your health. Be sure to discuss your pain relief plan with your health care provider prior to starting it.
