Though arthritis of the knee is very common, it actually is fairly easy to prevent. First, a diet rich in antioxidants, which naturally reduce inflammation, can be beneficial. Second, it is important to remain active and to get lots of exercise. Exercise helps prevent arthritis in two ways. First, it strengthens the quadriceps muscles as well as other tendons and ligaments which in turn support the knee joint, helping prevent injury. Furthermore, exercise helps you maintain a healthy body weight, which means that the knee joint is subject to less force and has to do less work.
If you already have arthritis, there are many different treatment options. For most people, taking over the counter, NSAID pain pills is enough to stop inflammation and provide relief. Some evidence also points to the usefulness of chondroitin supplements which seem to help joints stay supple and healthy.
