We all live such busy lives. Even in retirement, many of us have a rich and fulfilling time. It makes it very easy just to get on with things. After all, who wants to take time out to visit a doctor’s office anyway? The trouble is, as we age, those little aches and pains become more frequent, and they can even become more intense. It’s just what happens, right? Not always. And you don’t have to put up with it, either.
Most of us realize we’re not as fast, supple, energetic, or strong as we were in our teens and twenties. And, for the most part, we’re fine with that. We accept our bodies are changing over the years. There may be a few more sounds of cracks and pops as we move, and the odd twinge that is very easy to ignore.
But there are many different pains, aches, and twinges that you must seek medical advice about. And many of them can occur at any age. Headaches are something we’ve all experienced. Some of us have migraines, others may have tension headaches. Blocked sinuses can also cause headaches. But the kind of headache that doesn’t fade with pain relief or drinking a glass of water shouldn’t be ignored. And if your vision is impaired, it’s time to visit your doctor.
We’ve all had the odd creaking sound from our knees and other joints. Perhaps it’s even the source of a running joke in your family. However, arthritis is no laughing matter. When it occurs in your hands, day to day tasks and personal care can suddenly become incredibly difficult. Catching it early may offer you the chance for treatment to reduce the pain and disability you might experience.
Backs often ache as well. After all, they’ve held us upright and supported the weight of a few children being picked up too. But pain near the spine shouldn’t be ignored, particularly as we age. Conditions like spinal stenosis may not cause much pain in the spine. But a progression of the condition can cause cramping and weakness in the arms and legs. Lots of muscular discomfort in the back can be helped with massage and warming of the area. Bone degeneration could require drug treatments and even surgery.
We’ve all had that moment when a chest pain gives us a momentary alarm. Often, it turns out to be indigestion. This happens when stomach acid is able to leak back through a valve and causes minor burns to the back of the throat and windpipe. Antacid almost always relieves it. But if the pain shoots through your left shoulder and arm, don’t hesitate. It’s time to call for help as your heart may be in trouble.
There are many other cardiovascular problems that can occur as we get older. Arrhythmias can be difficult to live with, and changes to your diet may be necessary. Symptoms may be very mild and all too easy to ignore. This is why regular health checks are important, especially if you often have the same complaints.
Take care of your health. Don’t ignore unusual sensations in your body. And have regularly occurring aches and pains checked out.
